L'Eclisse (Cert. PG)
Filmed in sumptuous black and white, and full of scenes of lush, strange beauty, it tells the story of Vittoria (Monica Vitti), a young woman who leaves her older lover (Francisco Rabal), then drifts into a relationship with a confident, ambitious young stockbroker (Alain Delon). Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop, Antonioni achieves the apotheosis of his style in this return to the theme that preoccupied him the most: the difficulty of forming true connections amidst the meaninglessness of the modern world.
Plein Soleil (Cert. PG)
Mesmerizing to watch, saturated in light and colour, and topped by Delon at his iciest, Purple Noon is a terrific treat. In his first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The
Talented Mr. Ripley, Clément’s camera celebrates the dangerous beauty of Delon as charismatic sociopath Tom Ripley playing out a game of murder and double bluff against stunning Mediterranean landscapes.
